History
Shaml is an independent non-governmental organization dedicated researching issues related to Palestinian refugees and the Palestinian Diaspora. It was established in 1994 by a group of concerned academics and human rights activists who felt the need to examine issues pertaining to Palestinian refugees in a comparative perspective; encompassing relevant experiences in other parts of the world. We aim to: (1) Raise public awareness, regionally and globally, about the conditions of Palestinian refugees and the Palestinian diaspora, their basic rights and the problems and difficulties they face; (2) Conduct primary research on refugee issues in Palestine and elsewhere, including comparative research in the sociology of migration (3) Help formulate and develop coherent long-term policy for Palestinian refugees, in the context of promoting a greater understanding of their needs; and (4) Strengthen links between Palestinian communities in the diaspora and their homeland.
