The Treatment & Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture
History

The Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture (TRC) is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit human rights organization with health service orientation, registered at the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Interior as a non-governmental organization (registration #RA-235/SC). TRC seeks to reduce the devastating physical and psychological consequences of human rights abuses, particularly torture and politically motivated organized violence as part of the victims' rights to reparations and to support the full reintegration of the victims into Palestinian society. TRC was founded in 1997 by Dr. Mahmud Sehwail, in response to the need for comprehensive mental health care services from a human rights-based perspective for abused and tortured Palestinian prisoners. Today, TRC is the leader in non-profit mental health treatments and rehabilitation, and a revered human rights advocacy, capacity building, and research institution in the West Bank. TRC works towards strengthening the recognition of human rights across Palestine, advocating for the abolishment of torture and organized violence in society, ending the impunity of human rights abuse perpetrators, and calling for the recognition of international policies which protect that rights of all persons, particularly the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT) and its Optional Protocol, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
