On Tuesday, July 15, 2008, NDC signed an agreement amounting to 6 Million USD for a period of 18 months with a group of international donors, including with Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands , for the set-up and management of Secretariat for Human Rights and Good Governance NGOs operating in the occupied Palestinian territories. This marks a continuation and strengthening of these four donors’ strong commitment to the Human Rights and Good Governance sector in the oPt.
Once established and implemented, Secretariat for Human Rights and Good Governance shall improve the situation of human rights and good governance in the oPt by serving as a secretariat to channel, in an efficient and effective manner, pooled donor funding to results-oriented Palestinian and Israeli NGOs working for the protection and the promotion of human rights.
The agreement was signed by Ghassan Kasabreh, NDC Director, and representatives of the four donor countries.
In addition to administering grant making to small and large NGOs, Secretariat for Human Rights and Good Governance will facilitate and support strategic sector initiatives, sector dialogue and networking and joint capacity building activities. These initiatives will result in the creation of new strategic synergies and the strengthening of existing ones as well as in the reinforcement of methodologies, tools and strategies in use by the beneficiary NGOs.
A sector policy dialogue platform will be created to facilitate and promote discussions and decision making on common issues. A comprehensive database of NGOs operating in the sector will also be created, providing updated information on the situation and trends to donors and other stakeholders.
