SOS Children's Village - Bethlehem
History
The SOS is a unique organization that is committed to long-term family based care for children in need. Paired with such a philosophy is a commitment to the community to strengthen families and protect the rights of children. The SOS Bethlehem was established in 1966, receiving its first child and officially opening in 1969. Currently there are over 100 children in the SOS Village consisting of 12 houses with between 7-10 children residing in each house. In the summer of 2006 we plan to build another three houses to accommodate the growing need; one of these houses will be designated for the Aunties who work part-time to support the SOS mothers. Each house is run by an SOS mother- these mothers are not married nor have any of their own children- they have made a commitment to raise our children as their own. The SOS Village also includes a house for the SOS director and family above the administration building, a maintenance workshop, a meeting room, a counseling center, weekly medical clinic, a club room for the children, and a new playground.
