A Human Rights Review on the EU and Israel - Relating Commitments to Actions

The report examines the EUs positions and responses to Israeli violations of international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), and its commitments to respect and promote human rights in relation to its actions vis--vis Israel. It also constitutes the EMHRNs first annual assessment of EU compliance with its own human rights commitments in its relations to a third country in the Barcelona Process.

The Impact of the Annexation Wall Around al-Sheikh Sa’d/Jabal al-Mukabber

This publication analyses the impact of the Annexation Wall on al-Sheikh Sa'd, an area of Jabal al-Mukabber, a large southern Jerusalem town occupied in 1967. Those in al-Sheikh Sa'd are considered West Bank residents, while those in Jabal al-Mukabber have Jerusalem identity cards. The situation has been exacerbated by the planned construction of the Annexation Wall, which will separate al-Sheikh Sa'd residents from their families, land and jobs.

The International Court of Justice and the Annexation Wall: Replacing Politics With Law

This paper, released the day that the International Court of Justice began its hearings for the Advisory Opinion on the Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, provides a legal analysis of the Annexation Wall under international human rights and humanitarian law. It addresses the impact of the Wall on such legal issues as the prohibition of property destruction; freedom of movement; the rights to work, health, education and self-determination

The Israeli High Court of Justice and the Palestinian Intifada: a stamp of approval for Israeli violations in the Occupied Terri

This legal study presents an analytical reading of certain Israeli High Court decisions during the second Palestinian intifada, which broke out in September 2000. The study highlights, through analysis of selected decisions, the role which the High Court played and still plays in providing a "legal" basis and a stamp of approval for Israeil violations and war crimes committed by the Israeli occupying forces angainst Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Bridging the Gap Between Research and Policy Making in the Palestinian Territories

The aim of this study is to improve and develop the relevance, effectiveness and impact of locally produced research on economic and social policy. This will be achieved by building a clearer picture of the parties involved in the policy-making process and the political and economic systems they operate within. This study also examines the relationship between the research and policy-making spheres and the role that international actors and donors play in processes of research and policy formulation.

Palestinian Youth and Poltical Parties

Palestinian youth have played a pioneering role in shouldering the burdens of the Palestinian national struggle making them a key factor in maintaining national identity and the emergence of the Palestinian national movement and its political forces. As a result, young people have been the most exposed to political and military violence, with many being killed, injured, detained, tortured and deported.

Mapping of Organizations Working With Youth in the oPt

This exercise was a mapping of all organizations dealing with youth. Some of them are involved only in youth related activities while others are involved in some projects related to youth.
Over 540 organizations were approached: about 300 were from the West Bank and the rest were from the Gaza Strip, as noted in figure 1, below. Due to the problems of getting the filled questionnaires from the Gaza Strip, the team in Gaza was requested to retype all the answers so that they can send the material electronically for data coding and data entry in Ramallah.

The Annexation Wall and its Associated Regime

Since June 2002, Israel has been constructing what Professor John Dugard, former UN Special Rapporteur Special apporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, has termed “the Annexation Wall.” From the outset, the Wall building exercise has faced international condemnation on the basis of its illegality under international law. Approximately 87 percent of the Wall will be built on occupied territory.

Legitimising the Illegitimate? The Israeli High Court of Justice and the Occupied Palestinian Territory

This short study seeks to tackle broadly the issues and concerns facing all those charged with legally protecting the rights of Palestinians. First, it outlines both the legal landscape of the OPT in which the HCJ operates and the international legal standards applicable to the OPT. It then surveys the nature and effect of some of the Court’s jurisprudence throughout the period of the occupation under a series of headings, before focusing specifically on some important decisions that have been handed down since Al-Haq’s last study of the Court was published in 2004.
