The State of the World’s Children 2012

More than half of the world’s 7 billion people now live in urban areas. What does this mean for children? UNICEF has dedicated the 2012 edition of its flagship report, The State of the World’s Children, to the situation of children growing up in urban settings. Cities are known to generate economic growth – but, as the report reveals, not all children are benefiting from urban expansion. In this increasingly urban world, the absence of a sustained focus on child rights means that some children are being left behind.

Israeli forces kill a Palestinian man and injure over 130 in protests and clashes in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Also in the West Bank, 13 people displaced and over 1,000 trees vandalized by Israeli forces. In Gaza, two militants injured and a factory and at least three houses sustained damage by air strikes. Power supply remains fragile, triggering long power cuts and leaving around 40% of Gaza population without access to running water.

Israeli forces injure 55 Palestinians throughout the oPt and cause damage to civilian structures, including at least 15 houses, a hospital and a school in Gaza. Settlers injure another Palestinian. Israeli authorities demolish seven structures and cut down over 300 olive trees in the West Bank. Road accident in Area C claims the lives of six children and one teacher. In Gaza, despite an increase in fuel supply, high power outages continue, disrupting daily life.

Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip resulted in the killing of a Palestinian civilian and the injury of a child, as well as in property damage. Over 40 Palestinian-owned structures were demolished and a total of 126 people were displaced in Area C and East Jerusalem due to the lack of permits, the largest number in a single week in more than seven months.

The Israeli Supreme Court (IHC) rejects petition challenging constitutionality of law that bans family reunification for Palestinian citizens and permanent residents of Israel with spouses from oPt. Another IHC ruling upholds the legality of Israeli-owned quarries established since 1967 in the West Bank-at least five of Israeli quarries in WB are owned by or operated within Israeli settlements. Palestinian victims of 2009 military offensive against Gaza still unable to seek compensation for war-related damages through the Israeli legal system.

This week, Israeli forces injure 15 Palestinians throughout the oPt. Settlers injure another three Palestinians. 12 Palestinian-owned structures, including nine related to a source of livelihood for Palestinian families, were demolished. In Gaza, there are concerns over death sentences and suppression of civil liberties. Limited agricultural produce leaves Gaza.

This week, Israeli forces injure 18 Palestinians and settlers injure another five in the West Bank. Three houses were demolished in a Jordan Valley community. Access to the herding community of Khan al Ahmar blocked. In Gaza, a worker was killed and another injured while inside a tunnel. Supplies for critical patients enough for more than a month were received. Limited agricultural produce leaves Gaza.

During the two-week reporting period, Israeli forces kill two Palestinians in Gaza and injure dozens throughout the oPt. In the West Bank, another four Palestinians injured by settlers. The Israeli authorities demolished 40 Palestinian-owned structures, the majority of which were water-related structures. Also in Gaza, the Israeli authorities bulldozed some of the remaining infrastructure at Karni commercial crossing. Limited agricultural produce continue to be allowed out of Gaza.
